A domain registrar is a company authorized to register and manage domain names for customers.

How it works

The registrar is your interface to the domain system: it submits your registration to the registry that runs the extension, then gives you the controls for renewal, contact details, transfers, and nameserver delegation. Guard that account well — whoever holds it effectively holds the domain.

Example: You use a registrar account to register example.com and choose its authoritative nameservers.

Often confused: A registrar sells and manages registrations for you; the registry maintains the master database for the entire extension.
